Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

Prepare for an exciting career as an English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor.  Obtain the qualifications and skills to teach ESL internationally or in Canada.  Learn the most recent methodologies and teaching techniques. Through a partnership with Advance Consulting for Education (ACE), the Niagara Catholic District School Board offers a dynamic two-part teacher training program to aspiring Canadian teachers as well as foreign English language teachers from across the world.

Two options are available:

 

1- TESL 100 - ACE TESOL CERTIFICATE (Cost: $1,980)

The ACE TESOL Certificate is a 120-hour program recognized by TESL Canada, the national professional association for ESL teachers in Canada.

  • 100 hours of classroom instruction
  • 20 additional practicum hours in actual ESL classrooms
  • 15-week part-time program from September to December
  • 4-week full-time day program offered in May (general admittance)
  • Customized groups may come any time of the year (contact us for details)
  • Small class sizes
  • All materials, course manual and textbooks provided
  • Recognized by TESL Canada for Professional Certification Standard One
  • Eligible for tuition tax receipts

2- TESL 200 - ACE TESOL DIPLOMA (Cost: $2,750)

The ACE TESOL Diploma is a 180-hour program recognized by TESL Ontario, the Ontario provincial professional organization for ESL teachers.

  • 150 hours of classroom instruction
  • 30 additional practicum hours in actual ESL classrooms
  • 24-week part-time program from January to June
  • Customized groups may come any time of the year (contact us for details)
  • Small class sizes
  • All materials, course manual and textbooks provided
  • Recognized by TESL Ontario for Professional Certification
  • Eligible for tuition tax receipts

 

Admission Requirements for the ACE TESOL Certificate

  • A Canadian university undergraduate degree or equivalent
  • Advanced proficiency in English (TOEFL or IELTS scores required for applicants whose first language is not English)
  • Genuine interest in teaching English to speakers of other languages

  • The ACE TESOL Certificate (TESL 100) or equivalent
  • A Canadian university undergraduate degree or equivalent

  • Language teaching/learning theory
  • Teaching methodologies and techniques
  • Unit and lesson planning
  • Testing and evaluation
  • Language systems (grammar, vocabulary and idioms, pronunciation)
  • Language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing)
  • Job search skills and career management

ACE TESOL Diploma Course Content

  • Language acquisition
  • Learning styles, learning strategies and motivation
  • Advanced techniques for teaching the language systems and language skills
  • Planning and teaching with the Canadian Language Benchmarks
  • Principles and techniques for adult learners
  • Curriculum design
  • Language assessment
  • The nature and history of language
  • Introduction to linguistics
  • Phonology, morphology and semantics, and pedagogical grammar
